The Truth of Jesus' Resurrection According to the Bible

According to the King James Version as recorded at Luke 23:43, Jesus said to the evildoer, "Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise." Was Jesus promising the evildoer he would be in paradise with him that particular day? From appearances, that would seem to be the case. However, appearances can be deceiving. If this version of the original scripture were true, it would imply Jesus was in paradise immediately after his death. If that were true, why would he need to be resurrected? However, other scriptures say otherwise.

The King James Version, as well as other versions of the holy scriptures, have mistakenly placed the comma in Jesus' statement in regard to the word "today" in the wrong place. The translator's mistake was a result of the false belief they held concerning the idea people go to heaven after death. A false idea influenced by the mistaken doctrine of the immortal soul. (Ezekiel 18:4,20) (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10) (Psalm 146:3,4)

Jesus did not ascend to heaven immediately after his death or his resurrection. For the parts of three days after he was executed, he was dead in every sense of the word. When Jesus died that fateful day, he became nonexistent. He was willing to put himself in that situation and condition for us because he loved us. Just think of that, he gave up his life as a spirit son in heaven and his life as a human on earth. He gave up everything for us knowing it meant he would ultimately end up nonexistent. That was a true sacrifice. His being saved from that condition of nonexistence was totally dependent on his heavenly Father, but he had complete faith his Father would restore him back to the life he had before he became a man.

On the third day after his death, God resurrected him. God disposed of Jesus' physical body that was in the tomb and restored him back to the spirit life he had before he became a human. After he was resurrected, he did not ascend to heaven right away because he still had work to do on earth. In the garden after his resurrection, Jesus said to Mary Magdalene, "Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to the Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and my God, and your God." (John 20:17)

Later that evening, Jesus appeared to his disciples, and again, eight days later, and again at the Sea of Tiberius, where Jesus instructed Peter to "feed his sheep". (John 21:14) Jesus remained on the earth after his resurrection for forty days. During those forty days, Jesus gave his disciples more commands and instructions on what he wanted them to do, building them up for the work they needed to carry on after his leaving. (Acts 1:3-4,9)

Then, Jesus ascended to heaven for the first time after his resurrection on the fortieth day, to do what? Hebrews 9:24 states, "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us." Hebrew 10:12,13 also states: "But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down at the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool." (Hebrews 8:1,2) (Hebrews 12:2) (1 Peter 3:22)
